Type Electives Lecture Series: Designing with Criticality & Love

This is a series of lectures that invite new and established voices to share their stories, knowledge, and ideas with the community. This spring, we’re inviting artists and designers to share with us how they approach their practice from a place of criticality and love.

In this session, you’ll learn from Schessa Garbutt's journey into type design through their brand identity practice for social justice and cultural groups. Garbutt troubles the typical design canon and its processes, while looking to guides across time and place for answers on how to honor and re-remember Black and brown visual cultures rather than defaulting to the (eurocentric) norm.

Each talk will be about 30–45 mins long followed by a short Q&A.
