About This Event

This lecture series invites new and established voices to share their stories, knowledge, and ideas with the community. This spring, we spotlight community-driven creative spaces and multidisciplinary design practices, highlighting how these groups foster collaboration, social impact, and cultural dialogue within their communities and beyond.

Join us as we explore the role of design in building and sustaining community, and how hybrid creative practices are shaping the future of creative work.

Type Electives Virtual Lecture Series:

Creating Spaces to Connect, Exchange, and Collaborate

Karen Mata Luna and Sonia Malpeso will share their experience building ZAMME, a hybrid cultural platform for visual communication based in Mexico City, and the key lessons they've learned along the way. They'll reflect on how their practice has evolved through collaboration, experimentation, and continuous learning.

They'll share what they're learning as they prepare to open a dedicated physical space in Mexico City, integrating bookshop, design archive, creative studio, and venue for talks and workshops. How do you create infrastructure that serves both local and international communities? What does it mean to operate translocally in design practice? And what does "hybrid" actually mean in practice?

Send us your questions through our Instagram @typeelectives

The event will be hosted online via Zoom.

We look forward to having you with us!

ZAMME

ZAMME is a hybrid cultural platform for visual communication based in Mexico City. Co-directed by Karen Mata Luna and Sonia Malpeso, ZAMME integrates public programming, publishing, and design practice—creating space to connect, share, and create across disciplines and communities.

Karen Mata Luna is a graphic designer and creative director with a multidisciplinary academic background in design and Fine Arts. Born and raised in Mexico City, she took a counterintuitive approach after obtaining her degree, choosing to concentrate on projects with meaningful social impact. Her practice bridges the public and private sectors, developing collaborative initiatives that respond to community needs.

Sonia Malpeso is a Swiss-American designer and art director based in Mexico City. Her independent practice spans visual systems, editorial design, and experimental typography, with a focus on hand illustration and analog methods. Her background in International Affairs informs her approach to cultural exchange and design as a platform for connection.
